When a family arrives at the studio and we know young siblings will be involved, they are totally the little bosses! From experience, I have noticed and realized in the past that these toddlers and children that are new big brothers or sisters do really well towards the beginning of the session- they’re super curious and willing to work together! So the first thing we do is wrap up baby and get baby ready for some really sweet sibling and newborn shots together. SOMETIMES, it’s not fool proof though. All children are different, and sometimes an older sibling may not love that their new tiny brother or sister is getting a lot of newfound attention- so either they don’t want to be photographed with them or they get really antsy. Another reason might be because they are tired. Us newborn photographers do have a few tricks up our sleeves, and sometimes that may mean a composite shot in photoshop in which the sibling images are merged together in post -editing. Anything for that sibling shot! After that we go right into the whole family together moments which are really heartfelt.

By the time we’re done with the family shots, the older sibling is pretty much done and ready to move on to the next activity. Sometimes it does work out well when mom or dad plan for big bro or sis to be picked up from the session after they are done with their segment, when it’s time for me to work with baby alone. Either way, I think this order works great for me!
